Duke

Update on Dukie:  Dukie came to us from Heartland Golden Retreiver Rescue in July 2007 and he left us in on November 4, 2010 as the result of uveal melanoma. He was a gorgeous dark red color and was named after the famous "Duke" of Bush Beans commercial fame. Duke was picked up as a stray by animal control in Tennessee and then turned over to Heartland for adoption. He was heartworm positive at the time and had to be treated prior to being adopted. But then he got "his own people" and became a part of the Kanine Kids! We sure miss the big red boy.  He was my protector and sweet boy.....fly free Dukie!

Hello, my name is Duke, but my close friends call me "Dukie" - it sounds sweeter!  And I am a sweet boy!

I came from Heartland Golden Retriever Rescue in Knoxville, Tennessee.  I was picked up as a stray by animal control and they turned me over to Heartland so they could help find me a home.  Well, those folks down at Heartland are real nice people.  They took me to a veteranarian and he gave me all my vaccinations to help keep me healthy.  Unfortunately, my former owner had not taken very good care of me and I had a disease called "Heartworm Disease".  I think it must be a really nasty disease because I heard the vet say that it could kill me and I would have to get a treatment to take care of those evil heartworms so I could live a long time!  The nice people at rescue knew all about heartworm so they told the vet to make sure I got all the care I needed to get well! After my heartworm treatment, I was placed on the "adoption list" but no one wanted me!!  Can you imagine that?  A nice dog like me!  They kept saying I was "too red" and they didn't like the spots on my tongue!  How could anyone reject this face?

Well, my mom knew all about "red" Goldens so she called Heartland and asked why no one was adopting me!  See, Mom and Dad have owned two other Heartland dogs so she had the right to ask that question!! When she found out the answer, she said: "Well, you just tell him that he has his own people now"!!   Mom and Dad filled out all the adoption paperwork and off I went to my new home!  It was a long way from Heartland!  I had to hop on a big airplane and fly all the way across the United States, but now I have "my own people"!!  Mom keeps saying that someone missed out on a really nice dog!

Here's a couple photos of me in my new home!!  As you can see, I'm looking pretty happy!!
