This is my chance to introduce my wonderful "Kanine Kids" who presently (December 2013) consist of two Golden Retrievers. Nineteen of the "Kids" on this page have already passed onto "Rainbow Bridge".
GOLDEN RETRIEVERS
Bogey: Officially known as "Lyric One Over Par", Bogey came from a fabulous breeder by the name of Sue Nation. Bogey was born on June 20, 2007 and joined the Kanine Kids on August 15th 2007. He had quite a day as he flew all the way from North Carolina to Washington state in the First Class section of a jet airliner!! He was quite the talk of the town that day. He is now 6 years old. He is a registered Delta Pet Partner Therapy Dog.
Bacall: In May 2011 we added "Shadowland's Springtime Applause", otherwise known as Bacall to our family! Now we have a "Bogey and Bacall". Bacall came to us from JoAnne Johnson in Morton, WA. She was from a litter of three pups - all girls! She is vivacious, sweet, and stubborn - all in one package! The little girl definitely has a mind of her own! She is now 2.5 years old and we are hoping she will be a Therapy Dog like Bogey one day.
Chow time at the old Hacienda!!! This was around the year 2000!
AT RAINBOW BRIDGE WAITING
Sugar: We adopted Sugar in May 1997 from DFWGRR. Sugar had been turned into rescue because his former owners said he wasn't housebroken. Hogwash!! He never had an accident in our house. He was just as sweet as his name and loved to be petted. He was the most "needy" dog that we ever had and followed me everywhere. Sugar went to Rainbow Bridge in July 1998 at the age of 12 years old. He passed away from a hemangiosarcoma in his heart.
Lex: Lex was our first Jack Russell. He went to Rainbow Bridge in April 1998 at the age of 12 years old. Despite the fact that he was the oldest and smallest dog in the house, he was the Alpha Dog to the end. Lex was not the typical JR - he had manners and swore he was a prince in his former life.
Howie: Howie came to us from the Phoenix Humane Society. We lost Howie to Short Bowel Syndrome at twelve years. He also had epilepsy, but he was just the perfect housedog. Howie loved everybody and everything.
Major: Major joined us on the 4th of July 1996. He also came from DFWGRR. Major went to Rainbow Bridge in February 2000 at the age of 14.5 years old. He developed prostate cancer that was inoperable. Major won a battle with dermal lymphoma at the age of 12. Major (like Snapper) could never leave a rattlesnake alone. Major was the patriarch of the family and was a very proud and noble dog.
Snapper: Snapper was Lex's son. He lived to be 12.5 years old and was the TYPICAL JR. We never thought he would live to see his old age since he tried to tackle everything from rattlesnakes to porcupines. Snapper died of Cushing's Disease in April 2000 - two years to the day after his dad, Lex. I miss him terribly. He was my child......
Buddy: Buddy joined the Kanine Kids in July 1998. His former owners had recarpeted their house and Buddy had an "accident" on it. They took him to their vet and requested that he be put to sleep. To the credit of their vet, he refused and asked them to sign Buddy over to Golden Retriever Rescue. Buddy was 11.5 years old at the time and also had epilepsy. He made a long Canine Underground Railroad (CUR) run from Chicago to Arizona and now lived happily at our house until March 2001 where he passed away from cancer at the age of 14 years.
Lucy: Lucy was a Tennessee girl like Sammy. She joined our family in November 1999 and had terrible skin problems at the time. However, putting her on Innova dog food cleared all that up and a photo of the "Lovely Lucy-Goosy" recently won a photo contest. Lucy was never far from a tennis ball!! Lucy spent almost three years with us before she departed to Rainbow Bridge on August 14, 2002 as a result of bone cancer.
Sammy: Sammy became part of the Kanine Kids in April 1999. Sammy was discovered by Jack Russell Rescue in Tennessee (Judi Lovell) and needed a special home as he is totally blind. See his web page below for the story about this very special boy. Sammy left for Rainbow Bridge on November 12, 2004 as a result of squamous cell carcinoma.
Woode: Woode was the first Golden Retriever in the family. We purchased him at the age of seven weeks. He passed away from lymphosarcoma on March 24, 2005 at the age of eleven years old. He was 85 pounds of big, beautiful, blonde boy. He was such a clown and we loved him dearly. Woode always woke up "happy, happy, happy!!"
Buster: Buster joined the Kanine Kids in March 2002. He was a stray in the shelter who was on their "kill" list. Buster left for Rainbow Bridge On November 21, 2006. He was about 11 years old . He had some upland bird training and loved to swim in the river behind our house and loved to "wa-hoo!!
Thumper: Thumper joined the Kanine Kids on November 6, 2003. He departed this earth o May 4, 2007 at the age of 13+ years. He came to us from Heartland GRR in Tennessee. He was blind and partially deaf but he was very, very sweet and the biggest mooch you have ever seen! He was found lost/abandoned on the side of a road in Tennessee.
Max: Max joined the Kanine Kids on June 18, 2005 and left this earth on July 11, 2008. He was 13 years old. Max was on "Death Row" at the local animal shelter when we found out about him. He was a very sweet dog who never met any food he didn't like! He was the "Grandpa" to Bogey when he arrived in August 2007 and taught Bogey many wise lessons before departing to Rainbow Bridge.
Quincy: October 10, 1994 - December 11, 2009 - Quincy was our first "rescue" Golden. He came to us from DFW Golden Retriever Rescue. God shared him with us for 15 years, 2 months, and one day. He outlived all the first and second generation of dogs with the exception of Miss Maggie. He was my "sweet pea" and the best all around dog we ever owned. He never met a person or a critter that he didn't like.
Maggie: December 24 - 1996 - July 29, 2010 - Maggie was our last Jack Russell and lived to be 13 1/2 years old. She was also our longest living Jack Russell. She tipped the scales at an amazing 12 pounds!! She was very sweet and loved to chase a ball and any critters she could find. Even though most of the Kanine Kids were A LOT bigger than her, she kept them right in line. I think I should have bought her a "NO FEAR" bandana!
Duke: Dukie came to us from Heartland Golden Retreiver Rescue in July 2007 and he left us in on November 4, 2010 as the result of uveal melanoma. He was a gorgeous dark red color and was named after the famous "Duke" of Bush Beans commercial fame. Duke was picked up as a stray by animal control in Tennessee and then turned over to Heartland for adoption. He was heartworm positive at the time and had to be treated prior to being adopted. But then he got "his own people" and became a part of the Kanine Kids!
Sam: Sam became a part of our family at the end of May 2009 and left us on April 20, 2011 due to a lung tumor and laryngeal paralysis. When we adopted Sam, he had been found by an animal control officer and taken to the shelter. He was so emaciated that they didn't think he would live! Well, they hadn't seen "Dr. Ro" at work. We adopted him and he became a happy, goofy boy who loved his "tenny balls". He loved his toys and carried them in his mouth on the walk every day! Sam was a clown and we missed him very much...
Bailey: Bailey came to live with us in July 2010. She was 11 years old and we were so happy to have her in our lives! She fit in perfectly with the rest of the Kanine Kids. She was the dog who "came to visit" but ended up staying permanently. She was always quite spry for her age and enjoyed chasing jack rabbits and taking naps. And boy, could she snore!! We nicknamed her "The Duchess" (as she was treated like royalty!) and were quite happy to have a female golden in our house again after being without one for almost eight years. Sadly, Bailey developed bone cancer at the age of 14 years and departed for Rainbow Bridge in early July 2013. She is greatly missed.
